JEE Mains: An Overview

JEE Mains (Joint Entrance Examination – Mains) is a highly competitive entrance exam for admission into undergraduate engineering programs at various institutions across India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and serves as the first stage for admission to engineering colleges, including those under the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and many other private and government-funded engineering colleges.

Key Features of JEE Mains

Purpose:
- Admission to B.Tech/B.E. programs at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes.
- Serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, the second stage of the IIT admission process.

These are the core subjects that are tested in the exam.
Mode of Examination:
- Computer-Based Test (CBT) for both Paper 1 (B.Tech/B.E.) and Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning).
- Paper 1 is for B.Tech and is completely MCQ-based.
- Paper 2 is for B.Arch and includes both MCQ and numerical-based questions.
Exam Duration:
- Paper 1 (B.Tech) is 3 hours long.
- Paper 2 (B.Arch) is also 3 hours long.

Paper 1 (for B.Tech/B.E.):

Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit: There is no age limit for JEE Mains, but candidates must meet the age requirements for the institutions they wish to apply to.
Educational Qualification:
- Must have passed the 12th grade or equivalent exam.
- Candidates who have appeared for their 12th exam or equivalent in the current year are also eligible.
Subjects:
- Must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 12th grade.
Number of Attempts: Candidates can appear for JEE Mains a maximum of three times in consecutive years.

Application Form Release: Typically in the first week of December
Examination Dates: JEE Mains is held twice a year, in January and April.
Result Declaration: Results are typically announced within a few weeks after the exam.
Counseling: After the results, candidates are invited to participate in the counseling process for seat allocation.

JEE Mains Exam Schedule

The exam is conducted in two sessions:

Session 1 (January) – Conducted in the first month of the year.
Session 2 (April) – Conducted in the fourth month of the year.

Candidates can choose to appear for one or both sessions of the exam. The best score from these sessions is considered for the final ranking.

JEE Mains Application Process

Registration: Candidates need to visit the official NTA JEE Mains website to register.
Filling the Application: Fill in personal details, educational details, and upload the necessary documents (photo, signature, etc.).
Payment of Fees: Application fee payment is done online, and fees vary depending on the category (General, OBC, SC/ST, etc.).
Downloading Admit Card: The admit card is released a few days before the exam and can be downloaded from the official website.

JEE Mains Result and Rank

The results for JEE Mains are released after the completion of both sessions (January and April).
The result includes the NTA score which is used for calculating ranks.
Rank: Ranks are based on the NTA score, and it is used for admission into various participating institutions.
- All India Rank (AIR) is important for qualifying for JEE Advanced and for allotment of seats in NITs and IIITs.

JEE Mains and JEE Advanced

JEE Mains is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is required to gain admission to IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).
Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates (based on JEE Mains results) are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
